Gavin Jones has published articles on writers such as George W. Cable, Theodore Dreiser, W.E.B. DuBois, Sylvester Judd, Paule Marshall, Mark Twain, and Herman Melville, in journals such as American Literary History, New England Quarterly, and African American Review. He teaches courses in American literature from 1840 to 1940. Jones is the author of Strange Talk: The Politics of Dialect Literature in Gilded Age America and American Hungers: The Problem of Poverty in U.S. Literature, 1840-1945. He is currently working on a study of the American writer Sherwood Anderson, and a book, "Poe Mania," about Edgar Allan Poe's weird effect on his readers. He is also writing a book about the American writer Ned Buntline (E.Z.C. Judson). He has been at Stanford since 1999.
