William Bridges received his Ph.D in Sociology from Northwestern University in June 1975 and joined the UIC faculty as Assistant Professor in September of 1975, where he has taught for 30 years. In the Department, Bridges has served as Director of Graduate Studies, Interim Department Head (1 year) and Department Head (6 years). He has served on the Editorial Board of the American Sociological Review, as a member of the National Science Foundation Review Panel for the Sociology Program, and as elected member of the Executive Committee of the ASA Section on Work and Occupations. His research has received external support from the National Science Foundation and from the American Bar Foundation. His co-authored book, Legalizing Gender Inequality, received the ASA's Distinguished Scholarly Publication Award, the best Book Award from the ASA Section on the Sociology of Law, and a book award from the Center for the Study of Social Inequality at Cornell University.
